Certain places in Fountain City have contributed to the educational or cultural climate or have otherwise made a difference in the lives of the people in the community.
Oakland was one of those places.
Many of Fountain City's places were considered in Nanny Lee Hicks' classic "History of Fountain City" (Coleman Printing Company, Knoxville, 2000).
Oakland has a rich and interesting history. A number of families living there (past or present) descend from those who originally established the community and some of their ancestors helped to develop nearby Greenwood Cemetery.
Foster Chapel Church and the matriarch of the community, Ms. Odessa McFarland, have contributed greatly to the community and their history is important to record for posterity. Anyone with information on the church and Ms. McFarland is encouraged to Email or call the webmaster.
We hope to have this essay in place a few week or months.
